Book Summary

A New York Times Bestseller. Doomed to ― or blessed with ― eternal life after drinking from a magic spring, the Tuck family wanders about trying to live as inconspicuously and comfortably as they can. When ten-year-old Winnie Foster stumbles on their secret, the Tucks take her home and explain why living forever at one age is less a blessing that it might seem. Complications arise when Winnie is followed by a stranger who wants to market the spring water for a fortune.

Discussion Questions

  • The Tucks will live forever. How do you think they feel about it? What are the good things and bad things about their situation?

  • How do you feel about the man in the yellow suit?

  • When Winnie thinks about Mae hitting the man in the yellow suit, she compares Mae's action to a time when she hit a wasp before it stung her. Do you think this is a good comparison? Why or why not?

  • Why do you think it might be the right decision for Winnie to help Mae? Why do you think it might be wrong for Winnie to help Mae?

  • Why does Winnie use the water on the toad instead of saving it for herself?

  • How does the author connect Winnie and the Tucks at the end of the story?

  • In what ways can life be seen as a cycle or wheel? What is the purpose of death in the world of living things?

  • What are some ways that people grow and change as they experience the different stages of life?

  • How might living forever be both a blessing and a curse?

  • How can the certainty of death influence the way we choose to live our lives?
