Lumber fire in downtown Burlington June 12, 1918.  The Old Virginia Bridge and Iron Company of Roanoke, Virginia operate under various names between 1901 - 1913, then sold/gave the building for use by a Burlington lumber company.

Industrial Promoter of Burlington.  He was instrumental in organizing the Piedmont Trust Co., the Carolina Bridge Co, The Piedmont Railway and Electric Co., and the Keystone Finishing Mills.  He met an untimely death in 1915 in a yacht accident when it blew up.

First hired in 1893 as an assistant to the original 'shoe man' in Burlington, John R. Foster, at the Foster Shoe Company.  In 1906, Foster Shoe Company was incorporated and Sidney Horne became the first President.     Father of Harvey O. Horne. He died in on July 16, 1945.

A born in Randolph County on a farm near Asheboro, of Willey Pickett and Elizabeth Davis, on May 15, 1863.  John Alfred Pickett started as a teacher in Liberty and eventually got his degree from Vanderbilt University of Nashville, TN.  He began practices in Alamance County in 1895 at age 35.  He served as a County Representative from 1907-1909.   Father of Dwight, Howard, Margaret, and Hatty.

Reverend Eli Washington Caruthers

Reverend Eli Washington Caruthers

Eli Washington Caruthers, Presbyterian minister, educator, and historian, was born in Rowan County, near Salisbury. His parents were James and Elizabeth Lawrence Caruthers. He next attended a school taught by the Reverend Joseph Kirkpatrick, a Presbyterian minister. In 1812 he entered Hampden-Sydney College, where he paid his tuition by tutoring students. Following his graduation in 1817, he entered Princeton Theological Seminary to prepare for the ministry and was licensed to preach by New Brunswick Presbytery in April 1820. In 1821 he was called as minister of the Buffalo, Alamance, and Bethel Presbyterian churches of Guilford County. He resigned the pastorate of Bethel Church after a year and gave up the Buffalo congregation in 1846. He remained as pastor at Alamance until 1861.
