Graham, county seat of Alamance county Is located in the industrial Piedmont section of North Carolina. The city was named after former Governor William A. Graham, who played a major role in its founding. It was incorporated in 1851.

People from Graham

Samuel M. Holt, Captain

Samuel M. Holt was born in 1862 and was the son of James Henry Holt, a textile merchant, and Laura Moore of North Carolina. After spending over ten years at sea, Samuel and his brother William ran the Lakeside Mills in Burlington, North Carolina. After his father died in 1897, Samuel moved with his brother to be a cattle rancher in Texas. He married Sarah Belle Griffith and had two children, Thomas Holt and Mrs. Webber Williams. Samuel died in Paris, Texas in 1924.

Robert Franklin Browning

Robert Franklin Browning was serving his country during World War II when he gave his all in the line of duty. He had enlisted in the United States Merchant Marine. Browning had the rank of Merchant Seaman. His military occupation or specialty was Wiper. Attached to Merchant Ship John Drayton.

According to our records North Carolina was his home or enlistment state and Alamance county has been included within the archival record. We have Graham listed as his city.

During his service in World War II, Merchant Marine Merchant Seaman Browning was reported missing and ultimately declared dead on 21 April 1943. Recorded circumstances attributed to: Missing in action or lost at sea.
