The library provides a variety of aids for anyone looking for a job or career change.

  • Stop in the library to use the free wireless (Wi-Fi) connection, or use your library card number and PIN to sign on to one of our public computers.
  • Make use of Microsoft Word resume and cover letter templates on public computers for professional looking documents. Click the Resume tab above for more information about creating a resume. 
  • Sign into NCLive for Job Accelerator for assistance on "The Fast Track for Getting Hired."
  • Free Computer Classes held at various locations to assist you in obtaining digital skills necssary to be successful in your job search and apply.
  • Peterson's Testing and Education Reference Center  is found on NCLive and offers practice exams in a wide variety of career fields, as well as a basic skills modules for math, reading and writing. You will need a library card to create an account.
  • GCF Learn Free offers lots of techonolgy tutorials but it also has a section devoted to Job Searching.This section covers writing your cover letter/resume, interview skills, job applications and more!

           

 

Before Starting Your Search

Finding a job today requires computer skills that were not necessary years ago.

Not quite sure about your computer skills? Take a look at Computer Skills with listings of online tutorials of benefit to Job Seekers. This guide will assist you by exploring areas to get you started with digital job searching.

Once you are comfortable using the computer, mouse, keyboard, and internet, prepare to search out and complete job applications!

Getting Started

What you need

  • Basic Computer Knowledge
  1. How to sign on to the computer
  2. How to navigate your screen with a mouse
  3. How to use a keyboard
  • Email address - you must have (or create) an email address to apply for online job applications!
  1. KNOW your username
  2. KNOW your password

What else you need

  • Some type of personal Organizational System
  • Enough time to apply to a job or multiple jobs (You can have 3 hours per library per day of computer time!)
  • Positive Attitude - Don't be discouraged!

It is important that you keep track of submitted applications, contacts, and progress. Keep a list of usernames and passwords for specific job application sites. Be confident in your strengths, be creative, stay positive, and don't give up!

Starting Your Job Search

Use technology, print mediums, career centers, and/or social media, word of mouth.

Job Fairs

  • Check the Library Job Resource Table for local events
  • Check the local newpapers (online as well) for any Job Fairs coming near you

Don't forget there are still some advertisements placed in the print newspaper classifieds. Check your local paper at home or come by the library to browse our selection of newspapers.  Sunday is generally the day with the most current listings.
