Online Job Search and Application Basics: Setting up Email

Helpful information for individuals in their effort to search and apply for employment online.

Setting Up and Email Account

Why do I need an Email Account?

An Email account is an essential tool in Job Search and Application. It is accurate to state that no online job application can be completed without an email address as this is the means of communication between an applicant and prospective employer. Therefore, it is important that an individual not only have an email address, but also have the means to check mail frequently for prospective employer notifications.

If you do not have an email account, you can easily create a free account. You will need to choose a username (the first part of your email address) and a password. Most email providers will offer guidelines on the format (length and types of characters) for both the username and password. You may have to try several versions of username and password before finding one that is acceptable to you and to the provider.

Note on username; when selecting a name for an email account that will be used in your job applications, consider a basic or professional name rather than something cute, naughty, etc. Also, there are no rules stating how many email accounts you may have, therefore, you may want to consider an email account for job purposes and one for personal use. Number of accounts is up to you and your ability to keep track.

Here are some tips for choosing a user name and selecting a password that is secure and memorable.
