Online Job Search and Application Basics: Mouse and Keyboard Skills

Helpful information for individuals in their effort to search and apply for employment online.

A Word About Mouse and Keyboard Skills

Don't Get Frustrated! Patience is key!

If you are using a computer for the first time, don't despair! Feel free to ask the Reference Staff for any help you need. We also offer Computer Basics classes for free to any patron (you do not need a library card but registration is required). If you are still feeling frustrated, pause what you are doing for a second and take a deep breath. Come back to the computer when you are ready. PATIENCE is the biggest thing you need when you are learning to use a computer.

Did you know that on average, it takes 24 hours to get used to a computer mouse? That does not mean one day, it means 24 hours of your hand using that mouse. Most of us do not sit at a computer for 24 straight hours, so keep in mind that it is also going to take TIME.

Keyboard Skills

Using a computer keyboard is identical to using a typewriter and also the same keyboard as used for texting. QWERTY is the name of the keyboard commonly used (look at the top left row of the alpha keys on the keypad).

The one finger 'hunt and peck' is also a skill, but you may want to consider becoming familiar with where the keys are located. Using this method is not bad but it does not allow you to type efficiently or without looking at the keys. Practing will be the best way to become a better typer!

And there is logic for where the keys are placed, the home row contains the most commonly used characters. Check out the Wikipedia explanation if you are interested in more about the key placements.

Using the keyboard correctly takes lots of practice too. Here are some websites where you can practice. Click on the links below to practing using a keyboard and typing faster.
