Book Summary

NEWSOUL
Ana is new. For thousands of years in Range, a million souls have been reincarnated over and over, keeping their memories and experiences from previous lifetimes. When Ana was born, another soul vanished, and no one knows why.

NOSOUL
Even Ana’s own mother thinks she’s a nosoul, an omen of worse things to come, and has kept her away from society. To escape her seclusion and learn whether she’ll be reincarnated, Ana travels to the city of Heart, but its citizens are suspicious and afraid of what her presence means. When dragons and sylph attack the city, is Ana to blame?

HEART
Sam believes Ana’s new soul is good and worthwhile. When he stands up for her, their relationship blooms. But can he love someone who may live only once, and will Ana’s enemies—human and creature alike—let them be together? Ana needs to uncover the mistake that gave her someone else’s life, but will her quest threaten the peace of Heart and destroy the promise of reincarnation for all?

Jodi Meadows expertly weaves soul-deep romance, fantasy, and danger into an extraordinary tale of new life.

Discussion Questions

  • Describe Ana’s relationship with her mother. Why does Ana want to leave her mother’s house as soon as she is 18?

  • Does Li love Ana? Why did she raise Ana instead of giving her to someone else?

  • Why does Ana trust the compass given to her by Li when she leaves home? Is she surprised when it doesn’t work?

  • What are the sylph? Why do the sylph attack Ana? How does she finally defeat one of them?

  • What does the temple in Heart represent?

  • Why does Ana call herself a "nosoul?" Why does Sam want her to call herself a "new soul?" How does he encourage her to feel better about herself?

  • Would you like to be reincarnated over and over with the same group of souls? Why or why not?

  • What would the advantages and disadvantages be of knowing everyone in your community for multiple lifetimes?

  • How would you feel if you were the “new soul” in your community? How would you feel knowing that one of your friends has been replaced by a “new soul?”

  • The idea of soul mates and the dedication ceremony is very important in Heart. Would you find it comforting or disturbing to know that there is only one person in the whole world who is meant to be with you over thousands of years?

  • Can Sam truly love Ana knowing that she may get only one lifetime?

  • Why does Sam take Li and Menehem's diaries from the libraries? What research is he doing at the library and why?

  • Why does Li want Ana back after Sam is arrested? Who is responsible for the attack on Sam and Ana?

  • What does Ana find inside the temple?

  • Who is Janan?

  • Will Ana be reincarnated? Why does she feel that she will be remembered whether she is reincarnated or not?
